Standard Quilt Sizes

Below is a graph of some of the standard North American mattress sizes, and a range of lengths and widths for appropriately sized quilts. There is no right or wrong size for a quilt. It all comes down to personal preference. It is important to note that after your quilt top is quilted, you may lose between 1-3″ in length and width, depending on the density of the quilting. For your reference, I also included a column on typical commercial quilt sizes from common retailers, such as Pottery Barn and Overstock.com.

These measurements basically amount to a 10-15″ drop on either side, and a 10-15+ inch drop for the foot of the bed.
